  • Saraswathi Mahal Library

1. The National Library of India, Kolkata

  • Established in the year 1836 as Calcutta Public Library
  • Known to be one of the best libraries in India
  • This is National Library is under Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
  • Collection of more than 2.2 million books along with other periodicals, maps, manuscripts
  • Area of 30-acres, over 86000 maps
  • Before independence, it was the official residence of Governor-General of India.
  • Opened to public on February 1, 1953

2. Saraswathi Mahal Library

  • Situated in Tanjore, Tamil Nadu, India.
  • Also called Thanjavur Maharaja Serfoji’s Saraswathi Mahal Library
  • Established during 16th century by Nayakas of Thanjavur
  • The Saraswathi Mahal library was started by Nayak Kings of Tanjavur as a Royal Library
  • Palm leaf manuscripts and paper written in Tamil and Sanskrit
  • housed within the campus of Thanjavur Palace
  • Known to be one of the oldest libraries in Asia
  • manuscripts (39,300) are in Tamil and Sanskrit.
  • 3076 Marathi manuscripts from the South Indian Maharastrian of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries

3. Asiatic Society of Mumbai Library

  • Established in 26 November 1804
  • Library was founded by Sir James Mackintosh.
  • Aims and objectives “to promote useful knowledge particularly such as is now immediately connected with India”.
  • Collection of over 200,000 books, 20,000 rare books, 1300 maps
  • Over 3,000 ancient manuscripts in Persian, Sanskrit and Prakrit,
  • numismatic collection of 11,829 coins includes a gold coin of Kumaragupta

4. Connemara Public Library, Chennai, Tamil Nadu

  • Established in the year 1896
  • Known to be the depository library for the UN
  • One of the four National Depository Libraries
  • Receive a copy of all books, newspapers and periodicals published in India
  • With 770,000 volumes of books, 3500 periodicals, and 160 newspapers

5. Rampur Raza Library, Rampur

  • located in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, India
  • Established in the last decades of the 18th century.
  • Built in 1904 as part of a palace in Rampur by Nawabs of Rampur
  • it is a repository of Indo-Islamic cultural heritage and a treasure-house of knowledge
  • Approximately 30,000 books in various languages like Tamil, Turkish, Urdu, Sanskrit, Hindi
  • 17,000 rare manuscripts, 5000 miniature paintings, 205 hand-written palm-leaf manuscripts.
